Course Description:
During your study of counseling the adolescent, you will learn history, theories and concepts which allow you to understand and communicate to others that development is an orderly life process. You will derive learning which will enable you as a lay Christian counselor to assist parents and adolescents to build an environment in which children and adolescents can progress to full potential and become well adjusted, productive adults.

Course Objectives:
- To gain an understanding and appreciation of the roles various theoretical formulations play in understanding adolescence.
- To expand and deepen one's understanding of adolescence as an important phase of the life cycle.
- To gain a comprehensive understanding of adolescence from the biological, social, cultural, cognitive/ developmental, intrapsychic, and historical perspectives.
- to gain a deeper understanding of the tasks and conflicts adolescents confront contemporary American culture.

Required readings:
- Course Text: Adolescence - John W. Santrock, McGraw-Hill, 9th Edition.
- Supplementary handouts, or articles.

On Site Schedule:
- Lecture 1: Introduction to Child abuse and neglect.
- Lecture 2: Introduction to Adolescent challenges.
- Lecture 3: Introduction to Adolescent anger.
- Lecture 4: Introduction to Adolescent truancy and delinquency.

- Week 1: Chapter 1, reading and paper.
- Week 2: Chapter 2, reading and paper.
- Week 3: Chapter 3, reading and paper.
- Week 4: Chapters 10 & 11, reading and paper.
- Week 5: Chapter 4, reading and paper.
- Week 6: Chapter 9, reading and paper.
- Week 7: Chapter 12, reading and paper.
- Week 8: Chapter 13, reading and paper.
- Week 9: Chapters 5 & 6, reading and paper.
- Week 10: Chapters 7 & 8, reading and paper.

- Week 12: Term paper.

Grading Scale:
A > 90
B 80 - 89
C 70 - 79
D 60 - 69
F < 60

Course Requirement:
- Weekly summary and reflection on the assigned reading in 2 - 3 pages long by the end of each week.
Final Grade Value 5% each.

- Term Paper, 10 - 12 pages summerzing and reflecting on what you learned in Adolescent counseling from a Christian prospective. Final Grade Value 30%

- Attending and actively participating during the On-Site program.
 

Final Grade Value 15%
