Course Description:

This is a survey course, which covers the major theories of personality and cognitive, social and moral development which includes; Freud, Erikson, Piaget, Kohlberg, Mahler and Ainsworth.  The full life span from embryo to geriatric age will be covered. Special considerations will be made in regards to theories of attachment and parenting.  Issues of normal development and pathological development will also be covered.

           

Course Objectives:

         Thoroughly understand the different theories of development and how they relate and/or differ

         Develop a clinical eye for healthy personality development as well as the possible risk factors for unhealthy development.

         Provide an overview of attachment theory and how it relates to development

         Understand the relationship of God’s grace, nature and nurture as it relates to development.

Course Requirements:

Each student is responsible for reading all the material required throughout the course and handing assignments in on time. Students will be administered four quizzes and a final overview exam; each consisting of multiple choice and short answer questions. Tests (4) are worth 60 percent of course grade; the final exam is worth 40 percent of course grade.
