Course Description:

This course connects Biblical doctrines with practical Christian living; it reunites the disciplines of Theology and Psychology. It takes you inside the Christian counseling office to show you what actually happens as counseling becomes intensely personal, reflecting the counselors’ spiritual lives as much as their psychological and theological understandings.

Course Objectives:

At the conclusion of the course, students should:

    1. Gain an insight into the rich theological framework that supports and directs a Biblical approach to counseling.

    2. Understand the connection between solid theology and the practical application.

    3. Integrate the spiritual life with the psychological expertise and theological understanding.

    4. Understand the role of the Coptic Orthodox Church’s sacraments of confession, repentance, etc… in the spiritual and emotional healing.

    5. Gain an insight into the key issues that distinguish Christian from secular counseling.

& Research paper

Mid term paper:
1. Develop two pages doctrinal statement summarizing what are our beliefs as a Coptic Orthodox regarding the Bible, the nature of God, the nature of man, sin, the person and work of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit, salvation, angles, the Church, and the last things.

Research paper:
The fields of theology and psychology overlap in numerous areas because they both deal with people. However, due to their different perspectives, sometimes they agree, and sometimes they disagree.
You have to write a paper on one topic and discuss how theology and psychology see the topic. Some of the questions to consider are: what are their similarities and differences? Where and how do they agree and disagree about the topic? How do they contribute to the overall understanding and solution of the topic?

The paper is to be divided into two parts:
A. Summary of research about 50% (you demonstrate a knowledge and comprehension of your subject)
B. Personal analysis about 50% (evaluate the validity of research, drawing conclusions based on your research)

Choose one of these areas:
1. The signs of spiritual maturity and psychological maturity.
2. Determinism versus free will (discuss both psychological and theological views of determinism and psychological views of free will)
3. The biblical and psychological views of the nature of man.
4. Christian and psychological theories of personality.

If you are not sure about a topic or how to relate it to the integration of psychology and theology, please feel free to call the instructor for this course.

Note:
Your paper should be a minimum of five pages and five references (other than the text book).
1. First page is the title page (title, your name, instructor’s name, course name)
2. Abstract (summary).
3. Your paper
4. Last page is the reference page.
