Since the Jews did not know that the angel came to St. Joseph and St. Mary was only engaged to him, but not married, so when she became pregnant, it would be considered adultery.

It can take up to anywhere in the second trimester for pregnancy to show. However, the angel revealed God's plan to St. Joseph before others knew of it or any harm could come to St. Mary because of this pregnancy. When she accepted God's will at the annunciation from Archangel Gabriel, she knew that she faced stoning and death, but she still accepted God's will and divine plan, regardless of what could happen to her personally. For this reason, she is above all the angelic hosts, martyrs, and saints, and truly all generations will truly call her blessed because her obedience and submission did not hinder God's plan of salvation, but rather executed His plan into action. In addition, they were not that famous, so their news would not have been discussed among all the Jews. St. Mary did not have relatives except Elizabeth, to whom God revealed that she is the mother of the Lord. Therefore, basically nobody would have cared whether this pregnancy was from marriage or not.
