I wanted to know if the Coptic Church has any view on involvement in politics. For instance, is it advisable or not advisable to be involved in running for an electoral position? Also, there is a political movement called, the "American Solidarity Party." This party consists primarily of Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholic churches, and advocates Catholic social justice teaching, specifically principles called, "subsidiarity" and "distributism," as well as a focus on family as central to human life, anti-abortion, etc. These stem from anti-enlightenment ideas and writings as well as the teachings of the Catholic pontiff on social justice up until the present. Similar parties exist world wide—some in positions of leadership, under names such as, "Christian Democrats." Due to the ecumenical nature of this political party (although not advocating "state Christianity” per se) is it okay to be involved? Is this party possibly the work of the Holy Spirit in the U.S. political system?

"As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God" (1 Peter 4:10). The Holy Spirit gives each one specific gifts. "And God has appointed these in the church: first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of hearings, helps, administrations, varieties of tongues" (1 Corinthians 12:28). If politics is the gift that He has bestowed upon you, then pray to use it wisely and humbly so to be able to use this gift to advocate for justice, peace, and morality in the realm of government. The Church does not prevent nor advise anyone from refraining from pursuing a position in politics. It is up to you to make the decision about your preferred political party. You are the decision-maker on whether you share the same ideology as the political party to which you ascribe. However, whatever shapes your social and political views should also be in harmony with your spiritual views.
