In the New Testament, our Lord Jesus Christ introduced Fasting, after his Baptism in the river of
Jordan He went to the dessert for forty days and forty nights to prepare for his Ministry. Also the
Disciples of Christ fasted during their Ministries and commanded others to fast.
The Purpose of Fasting is to
- Develop self-control (Emotions, passions)
- Develop self- discipline(Be a better Christian)
- Strengthens the spirit
- Signifies the rejection of the world
- Purify our hearts (To be pleasing to God)
- Gain love of communion with God
- Preparation for spiritual celebration (Easter, Christmas)
- Capable of loving others
“ I humbled myself with fasting; and my prayer would return to my own heart.” (Psalm 35: 13)
