I heard some fathers explain that Job was NOT in fact self-righteous. Is this true or not? Some fathers say he was just trying to figure out why God allowed such a trial.

Job was a humble man and not self-righteous. It is sufficient that God attested to Job’s righteousness, Himself, against Satan in Job's defense (Job 2:3):

Then the Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered My servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, one who fears God and shuns evil? And still he holds fast to his integrity, although you incited Me against him, to destroy him without cause.”
