Is sickness a test from God or warfare from the devil in order to hinder our journey towards spiritual perfection?

Once a person becomes spiritual and follows the Lord, he declares that he no longer belongs to the devil. However, the devil will not give up on that person, but will try to gain him back one way or another. Sometimes trials like sickness, failure in exams, loosing a job etc. could be ways the devil use to make us resent God. Although these things happen to us with permission from God, it is not God who is tempting us "Let no one say when he is tempted, 'I am tempted by God'; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone" (James 1:13). Surely, trials are the measures that distinguish between someone who has a strong faith and will abide with God no matter what; and another who would not withstand the trial and fall into despair, or give up and succumb to any temptation.
