When is Saint George's birthday?

St. George the prince of martyrs was born around the middle of the third century. We do not know exactly his date of birth. Our Church does not celebrate the birthdays of the saints but the day of their martyrdom or their departure. This is because the Church wants to focus our attention on the life of the saints and their accomplishments that they may be role models for us. "Remember your leaders, those who spoke to you the word of God; consider the outcome of their life, and imitate their faith" (Heb 13:7). The only birthdays the Church celebrates are the Nativity of our Lord Jesus Christ, the birthday of St. Mary, and of St. John the Baptist. St. George was martyred in 307 A.D. We celebrate his martyrdom on the 23rd of Parmoute (May 1st).
