I am having trouble with faith in God and total reliance on Him. I cannot discern if all things whether good or bad really come from God or does Satan have a hand in controlling our lives?

Trusting the Lord with all your heart is a commandment from the Holy Bible "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding" (Prov 3:5).

God does not dictate our actions in life, but gives us the freedom to make our own decisions. To follow His path or to fall into sin is left totally to our own free will. If we truly love God we should trust that whatever happens to us is for our own good. "And those who know Your name will put their trust in You; For You, Lord, have not forsaken those who seek You" (Ps 9:10) If we go into trials but our heart is with the Lord, we believe "And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose" (Rom 8:28). Do not doubt that God is with you. St. Peter was capable of walking on water during the storm, but once he doubted he began to sink. Psalm 16 is a nice psalm you can always recite to yourself "Preserve me, O God, for in You I put my trust..."
