Liturgy of the Word Subcommittee (Listen to samples from the audio CD)
When the Apostles would assemble the faithful in the Early Church, they would first offer the Eucharist. Immediately following, the apostles would teach the Word of God through Scripture.
Example is the story of Eutychus. (Acts 20:7-12)
From this tradition, arises the concept of the Liturgy of the Word. The first part of the Liturgy of the Word is a combination of the Vespers and Liturgy, which will acquaint those in attendance with the prayers of the church and its rituals. The second half of the Liturgy of the Word will consist of a Bible Study based on the Gospel of St. John.
There are thus, two subcommittees involved in preparing this event. The first subcommittee is responsible for preparing a curriculum for the Bible Study. This curriculum will challenge participants to discover the depth and beauty of Scripture, as it is explained and interpreted by the Early Church Fathers. This curriculum will incorporate Church dogma and tradition where appropriate, thus demonstrating that Orthodoxy is simply an extension of Biblical teaching, rather than a century-old invention. As this curriculum is completed, it will be made available on this Web site.
The second subcommittee will insure that the prayer in the Liturgy of the Word is arranged according to the specifications of H.G. Bishop Youssef. This committee is composed of both readers and chanters who are charged with preparing all the hymns and responses in English; they will also be prepared to function much like a choir: chanting all the hymns in harmony, and with one voice. They will also prepare a booklet designed to guide participants through the entire prayer; they will prepare a few versions of the booklet in order to accommodate the various seasonal hymns that will be chanted in accordance with the Church calendar. As these booklets are completed, they will be made available on this Web site.
Events Subcommittee
